HYD VARSITY PROF ARRESTED OVER BID TO MOLEST FOREIGN STUDENT

A professor at the University of Hyderabad was arrested on Saturday for allegedly attempting to molest a foreign student, police said.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the university condemned the incident and said that the professor “is placed under suspension with immediate effect”.

Ravi Ranjan, who is a professor at Hindi department in School of Humanities, allegedly invited the Thai national to his quarters on the campus on Friday evening on the pretext of extra classes and tried to misbehave with her. “He made sexual advances towards me and when I resisted, he beat me up,” the woman has alleged in the complaint. She, however, managed to escape and approached the police.

The incident triggered protests on the university campus. Members of the ABVP gathered held a protest demanding stringent action against the accused.
