GHAZIABAD: The Ghaziabad police arrested a 32-year-old teacher for allegedly raping and sexually abusing a class 9 student, who fearing her safety after the recent Shraddha murder case in Delhi, decided to seek police help in stopping her alleged assaulter.

The police identified the arrested suspect as Saurabh Gupta, a resident of Jaitpur in Gautam Budh Nagar, and said Gupta was previously working as a computer teacher with a renowned school in Ghaziabad.

“The suspect sexually assaulted the girl for about two years and continued to do so even after he lost his job at the school last year. The girl is now in Class 11 and approached the police for help. She told the police that she feared for her safety after the recent Shraddha murder case in Delhi, and gathered courage to seek police help. On the basis of complaint, we registered an FIR and the suspect was arrested on Sunday ,” said PK Triptahi, SHO of Nandgram police station.

Shraddha Walkar was killed allegedly by her live-in partner Aftab Poonawala at their Delhi flat in May and he also allegedly hacked the body into 35 pieces which he disposed of in the forested areas near their home. Poonawala, who was arrested last week, confessed to the crime, the police said.

“The suspect used to threaten to fail the girl in her exams and sexually assault her. Apart from IPC section for rape, we have also levied Section 506 (criminal intimidation) against the suspect. He was produced before a court on Monday and remanded in custody,” the SHO added.
