The Gautam Budh Nagar police on Monday busted a gang of thieves and arrested three men who would allegedly duped people across NCR cities by fraudulently withdrawing money using their ATM cards.

The suspects were caught from near Chhajarsi T-point service road of the FNG Expressway. They were identified as Gaurav Yadav (22) and Kuntal (18) from Hapur and Rishabh Pandey (24) from Baliya. All three currently reside in Chotpur Colony in Sector 63, police said.

The interstate gang had two modus operandi to fraudulently obtain ATM cards.

“They would put some glue inside the card slot so that when someone uses their card, it gets stuck inside. They would also stick pamphlets with their own numbers as customer care number on the walls of the ATM kiosks. When the hassled customer couldn’t retrieve his/her card, they would call on the customer care number to complain about the problem. The accused would pose as bank representatives and reassure the person that the card would be blocked and that they should leave the kiosks,” said the SHO of Sector 63 police station, Amit Maan.

Maan added that once the customer left, they would extricate the ATM card using blades, pliers and screwdrivers.

In another method, the accused would allegedly pretend to help ATM user and get their pin details before switching the cards with fake ones.

“Often customers are unable to get cash or don’t know how to use the ATM. These gullible customers were easily fooled by the gang who stepped in pretending to be helpful and would ask for the ATM pin number. Their card was then swapped with similar looking fake one,” said the SHO.
