Two sub-inspectors were suspended on Sunday after four chain snatching incidents occurred in the past two days in Vasundhara.

Deputy commissioner of police (Trans-hindon) Diksha Sharma said, “When I joined as the DCP of Trans-hindon, I warned all the police outposts to perform well so that residents would feel safe. But four chain snatching incidents involving women shocked me. I checked the performance record of the two officers in whose jurisdictions the four incidents occurred – their performance was very poor over the last three months. So, I took action against them.”

The suspended officers are sub-inspector Amitabh Singh, in-charge of Vaishali outpost, and sub-inspector Deepak Kumar, who held charge of Prahlad Garhi police outpost.

According to police officers aware of the chain snatching cases, one chain snatching incident occurred on Saturday afternoon while the other three incidents occurred on Friday.

In the incident on Saturday, a woman who is the wife of an officer on special duty (OSD), who is attached with a union minister, was going to a nearby hospital when two men arrived on a motorcycle, intercepted her near the entrance to her residential society in sector 18 in Vasundhara, and snatched a gold chain from her neck while she was speaking on the phone.

After this, Sharma suspended the chowki in-charge of Vaishali on Sunday.

Deepak Kumar, however, was suspended when Sharma came to know about three snatching incidents reported under the Prahlad Garhi police outpost on Friday.

“On the basis of complaints received from victims, first information reports have been lodged against unknown persons under section of 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code at Indirapuram police station. Teams have been formed to nab the miscreants. It is difficult to confirm if one gang has carried out all the four snatchings, but we are trying our best to trace the culprits,” Sharma said.
