West UP lawyers to intensify protest for arrest of accused

THE LAWYERS TO LOCK DOWN THE ‘ KUTCHERY’ IN THEIR RESPECTIVE DISTRICTS IN WESTERN UP ON FEBRUARY 4 AND ALSO NOT ALLOW ‘ LOK ADALAT’ TO FUNCTION

MEERUT : Lawyers of 22 districts in western UP have decided to intensify their protest for arrest of the accused, including BJP MLA of Hastinapur Dinesh Khatik, in a senior lawyer’s suicide case.

To note, in his suicide note the lawyer had accused the BJP MLA of harassing and insulting him.

The lawyers will lock down the ‘ kutchery’ in their respective districts in western UP on February 4 and also not allow ‘ Lok Adalat’ to function.

Meerut lawyers are on a protest for over a fortnight, demanding arrest of 14 people, including the MLA, named in the suicide case of a senior lawyer who was also general secretary of ‘ Adhiwakta Sangh’ in Meerut.

In a meeting of lawyers held here on Monday, a resolution was passed to intensify the ongoing protest. Meerut Bar Àssociatio­n’s secretary Sachin Choudhary said that it had been unanimousl­y decided to ‘ lock

‘kutchery’ in 22 districts of western UP on February 4. He said “Lawyers in their respective districts would keep the kutchery locked and not allow any judicial work during the day. They would also protest at kutchery gates to raise the demand of arrest of the accused.”

He said lawyers would also not allow Lok Adalats to function in different districts. “Lok Adalat takes place on different dates in different districts, therefore lawyers would ensure that it does not function in their district”, said Choudhary and added that Lok Adalat was scheduled in Meerut on February 6 and lawyers were prepared to stop its functionin­g.

Meanwhile, lawyers are also sitting on relay hunger strike inside the district magistrate’s office for the past 13 days to push their demand. They also took out a march to the ADG ( zone) office and handed over their charter of demands to ADG Rajeev Sabharwal and thereafter formed human chain at city’s busiest Begum bridge crossing after taking out a peaceful march last week.

The lawyer committed suicide at his Ishapuram house under Ganga Nagar police station on February 13 and FIR was lodged in the case only after lawyers surrounded Ganga Nagar police station for over 7 hours and thereafter jammed the DelhiPauri highway.

In his suicide note, the lawyer accused the BJP MLA of harassing and insulting him while mediating from the side of his elder son’s in-laws’ family. His son got married to a girl of Khatauli town of Muzaffarna­gar in February last year and they separated after a few months. The girl lodged a case of dowry against the lawyer’s son and family members in which MLA was mediating.
