US, China hold talks on climate ahead of COP26
BEIJING/TOKYO: US climate envoy John Kerry held talks in China on Thursday ahead of President Joe Biden’s climate summit of world leaders.
China’s ministry of ecology and environment said the discussions in Shanghai running through Saturday aim to boost cooperation on climate change and exchange views on the UN Climate Change Conference known as COP26 to be held in Scotland in November.
China to figure in Japan PM’s talks with Biden
Japan’s prime minister headed to Washington on Thursday to become the first foreign leader to hold face-to-face talks with US President Joe Biden, with concerns about China topping the agenda.
PM Yoshihide Suga will be hoping to renew the all-important alliance with Washington after the Trump era, as well as compare notes on an increasingly assertive Beijing.
The trip comes after two top US officials visited Japan in March, and following a summit
of leaders from the Quad alliance - a grouping of the US, Japan, Australia and India.
FBI opens investigation into China every 10 hours
Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) director Christopher Wray has told US Senate intelligence committee members that the
agency opens an investigation into various Chinese government actions every 10 hours.
“I can assure the committee that’s not because our folks don’t have anything to do with their time. “We have now over 2,000 investigations that tie back to the Chinese government,” he added.
