BJP MP seeks probe into unclaimed vehicles parked on AMU campus
AGRA: Bharatiya Janata Party MP from Aligarh Satish Gautam has written a letter to the senior superintendent of police (SSP) Aligarh seeking probe into hundreds of unclaimed two-wheelers parked near the office of proctor on the Aligarh Muslim University campus.
Gautam has raised apprehension over these vehicles ‘being used in criminal activities’ in Aligarh.
While AMU authorities said they did not receive any information regarding the letter, AMU proctor Mohd Wasim Ali claimed that letters have been written by the university to the police repeatedly seeking disposal of these unclaimed vehicles.
“I have come to know through the sources that hundreds of two-wheelers are lying parked for years near the proctor office of Aligarh Muslim University. To whom these two wheelers belong and why are they parked there? Why has the AMU administration allowed parking of these two wheelers for so long,” stated Gautam in his letter written on Monday.
The MP further stated in his letter, “It is well known that
AMU students have long drawn relation with crime. Thus apprehensions are there about these vehicles being used in crime in Aligarh and if it is not so, why these unclaimed vehicles are not being handed over to their owners or to the police.
“There is need for urgent probe to reveal the actual status about ownership of these vehicles,” said the BJP MP who asked SSP to apprise him about the action being taken in this regard.
Meanwhile, AMU proctor, on being contacted, said that matter related to letter written by the BJP MP was yet not known to him through any official communication. However, he has taken strong objection to allegations that “students of AMU have long drawn association with crime”.
“No such generalised comment was called for regarding students of AMU. Random cases of crime involving students, if any, are addressed through proper legal procedure. Besides, the AMU administration has itself written to Aligarh police seeking disposal of these unclaimed two-wheelers which are parked near the proctor office,” said Ali.
“These letters to SSP Aligarh and other police officials were written by proctor office of AMU in 2017, 2019 and 2021 regarding these vehicles parked for around a decade. We have submitted list of these unclaimed vehicles to Aligarh police who were asked to dispose of these vehicles, but no action was taken,” said the proctor who stated that AMU administration has no objection if police take up the matter and disposes off these twowheelers by way of auction or any other means.
“These two-wheelers mostly belong to students who left the campus after completing education at AMU. Few of them return to claim their vehicles and get them back if they have documents,” said the proctor.
The police at Civil Lines police station, having AMU campus in its jurisdiction, however denied to comment over this issue while claiming that the matter was communicated to higher authorities engaged in proposed visit of CM to Aligarh soon.
