As an increasing number of stars ditch their pants this summer, experts decode the sudden popularity of knee-length shorts

Sportsmen have been wearing them for years. They’ve replaced conventional swimsuits too. It’s not that they’re unusual, but you’ll seldom find them in a star’s wardrobe. So, the sudden popularity of knee-length shorts with Bollywood’s leading men is rather surprising.
Stylist Anvita Garg is in favour of the trend. “It’s pretty hot now, so it’s nice to have a pair of shorts handy. These days, the stars are fitter and more trend-conscious. They’ve realised that while it’s fine to wear shorts on a casual night out, there are ways to sport them at formal events too,” she says.
According to designers, shorts are being accepted formally too, this season. “If you accessorise accordingly, they can be event-appropriate,” says designer Rocky Star.
Pairing knee-length shorts with blazers seems to be an apt pick for summer formals. “I had blazers with shorts at my last show. People have bought them for brunches and destination weddings. They team them with jackets or bandis. Earlier, guys were reluctant to try such a look, but now, they don’t feel like it’s meant for the ramp alone,” says designer Kunal Anil Tanna, who gets several enquiries from the stars’ stylists.
Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh, Ranbir Kapoor and Varun Dhawan are all on the burgeoning list of A-list actors who have embraced the trend. “Casually, you can pair them with T-shirts or trendy shirts, and add sports shoes for a smart look,” adds Rocky.
Indigo and white are the season’s colours. “Try pleated and turned-up styles. Make the shorts the highlight by wearing collared T-shirts or linen shirts,” says Tanna.
