An eye for perfect vision
For those who are tired of wearing glasses or carrying contact lens solution in their bags, Lasik (Laser-Assisted in situ Keratomileusis) surgery is a safe and easy treatment that can give you perfect vision and rid you of the need to wear glasses or lenses.
One of the places you can learn more about this procedure, and even have it done, is the Bhojraj Chanrai Sankara Eye Hospital, Malad (W), which has conducted the surgery for over 4,500 people. Here are some insights into Lasik surgery, how it works, and whether you are a prime candidate to undergo the procedure.
What is the right age to get Lasik surgery?
There is no strict age requirement. However, most individuals by the age of 20-21 have reached a point at which the prescription for their glasses will remain relatively stable. A good candidate should have a relatively stable glass and/or contact lens prescription.
How does the surgery work?
The cornea is reshaped to correct a wide range of nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The effects of this surgery are permanent.
What are the benefits of the procedure?
After getting Lasik surgery, most patients enjoy clear and natural vision. Among other things, it allows them to enjoy a more active lifestyle. Additionally, undergoing Lasik treatment eliminates the expense of continually purchasing glasses, contact lenses, solutions, and other related items.
How safe is the surgery?
The USFDA (United States Food and Drug Administration) has approved Lasik as a safe and effective procedure. Scientific military studies document that astronauts, navy SEALs and pilots have had the procedure in the past. Dramatic advancement in Lasik technology over the last decade has made the procedure safer and more accurate. It is important, however, to remember that Lasik is not the right choice for everybody. Some people are not appropriate candidates, and for them, there are other options such as Surface Ablation or an Intraocular Collamer Lens (ICL).
Am I a candidate for Lasik?
The best way to determine this is through an eye exam conducted by your eye specialist. In order to be considered, you must be at least 18, healthy and have no eye diseases such as cataract or glaucoma.
How long does the procedure take?
Actual laser time is proportionate to the intended correction, and is usually between 20-50 seconds for most patients. However, including preparatory time, the procedure takes 10-15 minutes. Post-surgery, you may require rest for about two hours before being discharged. Pretreatment evaluation is done by appointment. Evaluation involves up to two hours for comprehensive eye exams — like refraction, topography and pachymetry — with no hospitalisation required.
Does the surgery hurt?
No, the procedure itself is virtually painless. A slight pressure may be felt during the procedure. You will be able to hear the laser sounds while you watch a red flashing light during the procedure. The majority of patients experience no significant discomfort.
How accurate is the excimer laser?
The excimer laser ensures unparalleled accuracy. Coupled with the expertise of our team, you can be assured of excellent results.
