‘I DON’T SEE AN ISSUE WITH THE RISE OF EDM’

Even though he is famous for playing tech-house music, UK-based DJ Nic Fanciulli, who recently performed in the city, has no issues with the popularity of EDM

EDM, or electronic dance music has been on the rise around the world. As a result, other genres get pushed out of the limelight at times. But Nic Fanciulli, who has been at the forefront of house and techno music for almost 10 years, has no grudges with the genre.

“I don’t see an issue with the rise of EDM. It gives artistes an opportunity to explore electronic music in different ways, and that benefits everyone,” says Fanciulli, who recently performed in the city as part of an event by Submerge.

The Grammynominated music producer, who has his own record label — Saved Records — started out as a drummer in an indie band, and then began playing with the British electronic outfit, The Chemical Brothers. This eventually led him to collaborate with popular French electronic music producer and DJ Laurent Garnier.

“I, like most people, began at the entry level of an art form, and eventually, delved deeper into the different genres involved, learning new things along the way. According to me, that’s the best way to experience music,” says Fanciulli, adding that the international music scene is fast developing in India too.

Apart from churning out releases with some of the biggest names in the dance music scene, he also gives young, upcoming producers a chance to work with him.

When asked what he enjoys the most, the musician says, “I’m addicted to DJing, and I have always loved it. As I come from a DJing background, it will always act as a driving force for me.”

Fanciulli says he has a busy year ahead. “We have some amazing records planned. It’s the 10th anniversary of my label, so we’re planning something exciting,” says the DJ.
