Aamir Khan’s human angle
Khan says that he “connected strongly” with the Italian film Life Is Beautiful despite the language barrier
Besides the Indian box office, he has always had a great track record when it comes to his films performing exceedingly well in foreign countries too. Aamir Khan’s Dangal (2016) has earned a whopping ` 1,000 crore in China, and 3 Idiots (2009) has got a Mexican remake.
“Ultimately, we are all human beings irrespective of where we are on the globe. If it’s a ‘human’ story, it will connect with human beings,” he says.
The superstar recalls watching the Italian film, Life Is Beautiful, which he “strongly connected” with. He says, “I haven’t been a part of a holocaust (as shown in the film) and neither has India experienced it the way it has been witnessed in Europe. But it’s a human story and that’s the key.”
The PK (2014) actor admits that he would “rather comment on the emotional part of a film, instead of the business side”. He says, “If you connect on a human level with all the emotions, and people also bond with the story, then business will happen on its own.”
Aamir goes on to give two recent examples of films doing well in newer markets. “One, of course, is Dangal that’s doing such great business in China, Taiwan and other places, which aren’t the conventional markets for Indian films,” he says.
The other example, according to Aamir, is Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. “It has done huge business in Hindi. It goes to show that if a film has a good story and great characters, the language will never be a barrier; in that case, the film will connect well [with the audience],” he says.
