GOLDENGLOB­E NIGHT: WHAT ABLACKOUT!

Hollywood gathered to honour talent, while making a fashionabl­e impact against sexual harassment

It was a protest within a celebratio­n when the biggest names from Hollywood and TV walked the red carpet at the 75th Golden Globe Awards night in Los Angeles on Sunday. The black dress code was to show solidarity to the Time’s Up campaign against sexual harassment in the workplace, following the multiple incidents of misconduct with women that came to the fore in recent times.

As for the top honours of the night, Martin McDonagh’s Drama, Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri emerged the big winner, bagging four awards: Best Motion Picture Drama, Best Screenplay, Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama (Frances McDormand), and Best Supporting Actor (Sam Rockwell). During her acceptance speech, Frances Mcdorman jokingly assured her fellow nominees (including Meryl Streep) that “tequila was on her” for the rest of the night.

Gary Oldman won the Best Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for his portrayal of the British Prime Minister Winston Churchill in Darkest Hour. “My wife used to tell her friends, ‘I go to sleep with Winston Churchill and I wake up next to Gary Oldman everyday’, which is better than the other way round,” he said on stage.

In the comedy/musical category, coming-of-age comedy, Lady Bird, won the Best Picture. Actor Saoirse Ronanm, who won the Best Actress award in a motion picture (Comedy/ Musical) facetimed her mother, Monica, while accepting the award.

James Franco won the Best Actor for his portrayal of cult Hollywood filmmaker Tommy Wiseau in the film The Disaster Artist.

Moving over to television, Sterling K. Brown created Golden Globes history after he became the first African American to win the Best Actor in a Television Drama award for the role of Randall Pearson in the family drama This Is Us. “I’m being seen and appreciate­d for who I am, and it makes it that much more difficult to dismiss me or anybody who looks like me,” he said. Elisabeth Moss starrer Handmaid’s Tale won the Best TV show (Drama) and Moss won the Best actress in the same category.

Nicole Kidman starrer Big Little Lies won three awards: Best Actress (Nicole Kidman), Best supporting actor (Alexander Skarsgard) and Best Supporting Actress (Laura Dern).
