Kareena and Sonam’s combination promises to strike gold
Veere Di Wedding is one of the few films in Hindi cinema to be front lined by female heavyweight stars as it brings together Kareena Kapoor Khan and Sonam Kapoor Ahuja. While Kareena has an illustrious career with a string of blockbusters and widely acclaimed films such as Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Udta Punjab (2016), Sonam too, is at the top of her game. She won a National Award for her performance in Neerja (2016), which was also one of the most commercially successful films to be headlined by a female star.
“Given that it’s the first time two mainstream female stars are working together minus an A-list male star, the anticipation for the film is higher. The makers pulled off a casting coup as Shikha Talsania and Swara Bhasker joined the ensemble cast in the film that celebrates the spirit of the modern day Indian woman,” says a source from the industry.
Though there have been several films in Hindi cinema that celebrate male friendship and bonding, Veere Di Wedding is the first film headlined by women and backed by women producers, that explores friendship like never before. The makers also insist that this film is meant for women and their men too, with the film’s campaign boldly stating that it’s ‘not just a chick flick’.
A source from the industry reveals, ‘With massive buzz surrounding the film, it’s no surprise then that the movie has picked up whopping numbers on digital and music sales. With ‘Tareefan’ becoming a chartbuster the music of the film has been lapped up at a massive price. The digital rights of the film too, have been bought by a leading player at a big price. After striking gold on the music and digital sales, now all eyes are on the box office.”
Talking about the film, producer Rhea Kapoor says , “Veere Di Wedding is an unabashed, unapologetic story of four women from different walks of life. Casting was the key here, and we knew we wanted to get contemporary female leads to do this film”.
Ekta Kapoor adds, “Kareena and Sonam have smashed every pre-conceived notion about actresses working together. The energy, vibe and buzz of Veere is what it is because of them. After all, in today’s tunes, friends are the new family.” Veere Di Wedding produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ekta Kapoor, Anil Kapoor, Rhea Kapoor and Nikhil Dwivedi is set to release on June 1.
