Success reflects in paychecks, says Abhishek

I’m trying my best to keep each character different from the previous one. But I know, I will run out of ideas. So, I plan to go for workshops as I want to open up my mind.

ABHISHEK BANERJEE, ACTOR

After the 2018 hit Stree, life as he knew it changed for actor Abhishek Banerjee, who is also a casting director and screenwriter. He was seen in the web series Mirzapur, films Dream Girl and the recent hit Bala. He says the success of Bala now makes filmmakers trust him “more as an actor”. “I have got calls from many people in the industry, who are interested in working with me. So, it feels great to be wanted. Of course, the success reflects in the paychecks and bargaining thodi kam ho jaati hai (laughs),” says the actor.

Abhishek is not only riding high on the success of Dream Girl and Bala but also because he has bagged a substantial role in the Karan Johar production, Dostana 2. “It feels great to be a part of this film. Dostana (2008) remains one of my favourite films and I am just thankful to the universe that I am part of the second instalment of the franchise. I have known director Collin D’Cunha, for a while and have worked with him as a casting director for Secret Superstar (2017). And, I have known Kartik Aaryan, too. So, I am looking forward to have a great time on sets,” he says.

In each film, Abhishek’s portrayals have stood apart. Be it the quirky friend to Rajkummar Rao’s Vicky in Stree, the shy suitor in Dream Girl or the eccentric hair dresser and friend to Ayushmann Khurrana’s Bala, his roles have always delighted the audiences. Abhishek admits that he works and designs his characters in one way and “keeps trying to add different attributes while shooting”. “For me, every scene is different, and I adapt to the surroundings to give every role a different energy. I’m trying my best to keep each character different from the previous one. But I know, I will run out of ideas. So, I plan to go for workshops as I want to open up my mind to different ideas and travel a lot as it helps in creating various roles,” he concludes.
