I’M ON A CONSTANT LOOKOUT FOR IMPERFECTION
Ayushmann Khurrana says the inherent charm in imperfect characters lures him towards them
With distinct stories and roles that not many actors would dare to take up, Ayushmann Khurrana has successfully made his mark in the industry. Perhaps that’s the reason why the audiences look forward to his big screen outings. While one wonders what makes him take up a peculiar role every single time, the actor believes that one’s imperfections are real and should be celebrated.
“Our imperfections make us real. Everyone connects to people and stories that they can easily relate to. People should be able to see the problems, the joy, the pain, the ambition, the imperfections and say yes, we are like this, we feel the same thing and we have lived the same life. And this is what drives me to choose my films,” he says.
The 35-year-old, therefore, is on a “constant lookout for imperfection because invariably, they give us the best stories”. And the appreciation he has been receiving from the audience and critics proves that he has chosen the right path.
“An imperfect man can do something heroic and the audience will love that. Triumphing over one’s situation and one’s own self are the stories that people love to see. If you look at all my films right from Vicky Donor (2012) to Dum Laga Ke Haisha (2015) to Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (2017), Andhadhun (2018), Article 15, Dream Girl, Bala, etc, I’ve played an imperfect hero, a flawed human being, who goes through his own struggles to do something out of the ordinary. These are the characters that appeal to me because such characters are genuine. And fortunately, the audiences have also loved them on screen,” adds Ayushmann.
Elaborating his point further, the actor reveals that he finds perfection boring. “There is an inherent charm about imperfection which is infectious. They are highly interesting, they have a gripping journey and it’s very appealing. Perfection is quite passé today because we have all realised that we’re imperfect and we celebrate that quite vocally. We no longer aspire to become perfect, we aspire to be better. We recognise that the struggle is real and we celebrate who we are. We aren’t afraid to look into our own eyes and accept ourselves in our truest form,” says the actor, adding that this is what he wants “to champion on screen” through his films.
