Goth glam is such a powerful beauty trend steeped in fashion and cinematic history that it makes its presence felt season after season. With the party season inching closer, one sees night prowlers ditching pastels and red lips for black, marsala, and berry pouts. While stark black could make one a tad vampish, one can experiment with hues of wines and plums to complement your winter closet to the T.

One must opt for a tone that instantly brightens up the face. Makeup artist Clint Fernandes observes, “I see a lot of beauty junkies play with deep hues like burgundy. Glam gothic pout is one key look which is prevalent all through the year and I see it as one of the go-to looks in the Indian makeup scene. Actors like Kareena Kapoor Khan and Malaika Arora have shown how to nail the look on a night out.”

The trick lies in balancing the severe pout with subtle makeup, for one could end up looking straight out of a Halloween party. “Do not opt for dark eyes with this pout. Instead, go for metallic or light eyes. Also, don’t pick dark mouth matte which looks fierce and overpowering. Instead, embrace something which ranges from soft creamy to a hint of gloss so that it doesn’t look too theatrical,” Clint adds.

Goth icons like English singer and songwriter Siouxsie Sioux and American singer Marilyn Manson have transmogrified gothic makeup into fine art. When one thinks of iconic looks in cinema, it’s hard to overlook Nancy Downs in The Craft and Christina Ricci in The Addams Family. Also, this pout could be interpreted into different genres, ranging from romantic to punk.

For blogger Akanksha Redhu, dark lips is the metaphor for rebel chic. “I use dark lip colours when I want a break from nudes and pastels. That’s when my rebel side comes out. I like to experiment with deep purple or red and keep the rest of the look rather pared-down. For the party season, I feel a dark matte lip colour complements a panoply of sequinned ensembles,” she says.
