Boudoir chic goes mainstream

Satin, the shiny fabric, has been the epitome of sensuality for decades. In the past, the textile was synonymous with boudoir chic, be it Elizabeth Taylor in Butterfield 8 (1960), or Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961). With time, slip dresses got accepted at formal outings, and who can forget Marilyn Monroe’s iconic pink offshoulder dress at a movie premiere!

In the ’80s, Princess Diana’s exuberant take on satin pieces made a bold style statement. Revisiting the ever-glamorous trend this winter, designers such as Tom Ford, Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, LOEWE, and

Stella McCartney have put the spotlight back on slippery satin. Not surprisingly, Btown’s much-loved fashionistas are not shying away from this fabric. Wondering why this material is making a comeback? Designer Aniket Satam says, “Satin has a sensual appeal. Its boudoir legacy makes it more enduring in today’s evening wardrobe. The whole idea of making bedroom chic cool again has given rebirth to satin obsession for the fall. Its sheen is subtle. It falls fluidly, giving an instant appeal.”

However, satin is a tricky fabric to work with. “In recent times, people underestimated satin for its cheap sheen, which is its true quality. Fine quality satin weave can either look absolutely expensive or very cheap. It’s a tricky textile to work,” says designer Prreeti Jaiin. If you plan to flaunt satin this season, opt for textural details, say experts. “Satin looks best when layered with something textural. Wear satin slip over sequins skirts with a tweed jacket. Satin slips in jewel tones can be layered with an organza trench for dinner dates. A classic neutral satin sari with a lace bralette is a winner for chic soirees,” says designer Pallavi Mohan.

Experts suggest to avoid fitted dresses in satin, as it creases at curves and highlight the wrong places. “Team it with faux fur, and layer it with denims or even sequins. It works best in colours like burgundy, cognac and deep wine,” adds Satam.
