After the success of Bareilly Ki Barfi and Shubh Mangal Saavdhan (both 2017), senior actor Seema Pahwa is glad that while she is usually cast as a mother in films, “at least each character is a different kind of mother now”. “These days, movies are actor-oriented and I am thrilled to be getting good roles now,” says the actor, who was last seen in the Ayushmann Khurrana-led film, Bala.

“I have three to four films lined up for release and I am happy that in each of them I have an important role. Earlier, people would not think much about casting for the mother’s role. But now, the character of a mother is prominent in many movies and so many actors are getting well-written roles. Industry mein kranti aa gayi hai. I feel fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time, and that I am able to get some really substantial roles. Writers now write parts for me and it is so wonderful to get meaty roles. The industry is changing for the better and behti ganga mein humne bhi haath dho liya hain (laughs),” she quips.

While waiting for good roles, Seema turned director, and she reveals that it was not easy to make a film and that many producers tried to dissuade her. “The producers said that my film didn’t have stars. My script was rejected because of the cast that I wanted. I didn’t feel the need to have big names in my films as the story was the star, for me. Today, people want a good story that connects with them. I had a story about deteriorating relationships in today’s world, in my mind. I kept working on it and when it was ready, I am glad I got the cast I wanted,” she concludes.
