I want people to have an expectation from my next project: Yami Gautam
With two of 2019’s biggest hits under her belt — Uri: The Surgical Strike and Bala, Yami Gautam couldn’t be happier. “I enjoyed working in Uri and my role in Bala was great fun, too,” the actor says.
“Last year gave me some memorable roles. Post Bala, I am happy with the response I got and the offers coming my way. Critics and audiences loved my work and so did the industry. I got several fan messages, videos and phone calls. I always wanted versatile roles but it is not easy to get them. I am in talks for certain roles… I want people to have an expectation from my next project and role,” shares the 31-year-old.
The actor will next be seen in Ginny Weds Sunny, a romantic comedy costarring Vikrant Massey, who she calls “a terrific actor”. Interestingly, the film will feature two former television actors in the lead roles — Vikrant has done numerous TV shows and Yami herself started her acting career with TV shows such as Chand Ke Paar Chalo and Yeh Pyar Na Hoga Kam. While the last few years have seen a surge in the number of television actors making their mark on the big screen, Yami says the shift from television to films is now easier. “It has become much easier now to transition to films as the lines between the mediums are blurring. Moreover, talent and creativity have no boundaries. It is amazing that good actors from different mediums are in films. It was tougher when I started my journey in films with Vicky Donor (2012),” she says.
Yami also rues the lack of comedy roles for female actors. “There are not many well-written comedy roles for female actors and to see people connecting with Pari (her character in Bala) and loving my role was heartening. They understood why physical beauty was important to her,” she shares.
“We don’t see many rom-coms these days and I feel the genre is disappearing. There is a certain charm about romcoms which I enjoy,” she adds.
