Indian Ocean’s Amit Kilam: Enjoyed creating a song with my daughters

- Soumya Vajpayee

Akey member of the Indian rock band Indian Ocean, Amit Kilam is known for his percussion and vocal skills. But, he enjoys composing, too. While most of his professional outings are either with the band or for films, his recent release is different. Titled Roshe, the song marks his collaboration with his daughters, Meyhaa (18) and Kaira (13).

He tells us that the song was created during the lockdown. “I couldn’t meet my band regularly because of the lockdown restrictions, so my daughters and I enjoyed coming up with this song at our home studio,” says Amit.

For the uninitiated, Roshe is a popular Kashmiri folk song and recreating the track was like going back to the roots for Amit, who hails from the Valley. “I love the peace Roshe brings. The song reminds me of home (referring to Kashmir), too,” he says.

He goes on to share that his band mates appreciated the effort by the father-daughters’ duo. Amit shares, “They all heard the song and loved it. Himanshu (Joshi; vocalist) told me a few times that he has it on loop. It makes me happy to see how much they supported the girls.”

Kaira feels that working on the song was a new experience. “We learnt a lot about composing, recording and singing while creating Roshe,” she says. Meyhaa adds, “Roshe was our granny’s favourite Kashmiri folk song. So, we recorded a version of it for her birthday last year. We realised that we took an instant liking to it and wanted to take it further.”
