Sumeet’s deep understanding of the script and his sense of what would work and won’t work still surprises me. SHUBHRAJYOTI BARAT, Actor

Looking for laughter therapy this weekend? Head to this comical play that will leave you in splits. Set in contemporary Mumbai, the play, Purane Chawal, is the Hindi adaptation of playwright Neil Simon’s The Sunshine Boys (1975). It delves into the world of two retired comedy geniuses, who are brought together to reprise their iconic comedy act after 12 years for a comedy festival in the country.

Directed by actor Sumeet Vyas, the play explores the problem that the two artistes can’t stand each other. It features actors Kumud Mishra, Shubhrajyoti Barat,

Ghanshyam Lalsa/Ishwar Sunya, Ayesha Raza Mishra, Kirti VA, Divyendu Saurav and writer Prashant Pandey.

Speaking about how important comic timing is between two actors, Barat says, “Comic timing is very important between actors. After all, it’s a comedy play. So, rehearsals are a good time to try different things.”

On the opportunity to share screen space with Mishra, Barat shares, “Kumud is a close friend.

I’ve known him for years. We have done a number of plays together. So working with him is like hanging out. An actor of his level of skill and experience keeps enriching you. I get to observe him and his process from close. It’s great fun and lots of learning.”

On the other hand, it was a first for Barat to be directed by Vyas. Sharing his experience, he says, “Sumeet is one of the few people I feel really close to, as I have known him for a very long time. He has always been extremely intelligent and perceptive. Although this was my first experience of being directed by him. But we were all very excited when he agreed to do this. He is very chilled out in the rehearsal space and I love that.”
