Simplicity rules
Actors often start preparing for their roles long before their films go on the floors. But R Madhavan (above right), who is set to reprise his part as the affable Manu in Tanu Weds Manu Returns, adopted a different approach for this film.
A source close to the actor says, “Madhavan’s homework for the role was to not do any homework. He went about his performance spontaneously, a decision that at first surprised director Aanand L Rai (above, left), but eventually worked in the favour of the film.”
In the original (Tanu Weds Manu; 2011), Madhavan’s natural performance was highly appreciated, but he says that while the role looks simple, it wasn’t as easy to play. “Tanu Weds Manu Returns is one of my toughest roles so far, considering that the approach was different. Aanand told me that the film will be shot sequentially, and I told him not to tell me what was to come next in the screenplay. I did every scene as it evolved, so I wouldn’t be in control. Also, I trust Aanand implicitly. I wanted it to be organic, and I do hope it has worked out for us. I hope it has added a new dimension to Manu’s character,” says the actor.
Eros International and Colour Yellow Productions’ Tanu Weds Manu Returns is scheduled to release on
