The first year students of the National School of Drama (NSD) are getting a chance to showcase their theatrical skills. They will be a part of a play production as part of the culmination of their year-end project. The play, Lower Depths, by Russian writer Maxim Gorky, is being adapted by director and set designer Aniruddha Khutwad.
“I am thankful to professor Waman Kendre, director, NSD, for inviting me to direct a play with the first year students. The play is about a shelter for the homeless. Among them are a thief, a prostitute, an orphan boy, a locksmith and his ill wife, a servant girl, a vendor of meat pies, a tramp, a fallen baron, a rejected actor, a hat maker, daily labourers and a wandering pilgrim. It showcases the struggles of downtrodden people in the pre-revolution period of Russia,” says Khutwad.
“Through this play, Gorky attempted to observe the lives of people who struggle to survive. These people, who have come together to share a common living space, have starkly varying pasts and are faced by a unsure, bleak future,” he adds.
Aruja Srivastava, a 22-yearold first year student, who is participating in the play, says, “Earlier, first year students did not get an opportunity to perform in their first year of training. I am really excited, as this is our first public show where we have learned the realistic style of acting. Our preparation spanned more than a month where we watched Gorky’s autobiographical movies and worked on our voice, speech and body movements.”
