Salman Khan’s acquittal in the 2002 hit-and-run case elicited a mixed reaction. Salman was acquitted yesterday as the prosecution could not prove the charges against the actor. Soon after the verdict was announced, it was reported that Khan broke down in court. He later tweeted, “I accept the decision of the judiciary with humility. I thank my family, friends & fans for their support & prayers (sic).” At court, Salman was accompanied by his bodyguard Shera, brother-in-law Ayush Sharma, sister Alvira and his manager.

Alvira, who has been a regular at Khan’s hearings, told TV reporters, “No words, it’s a big relief, thanks to God.”

People from the film industry celebrated the verdict. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai tweeted, “God is always kind to good human beings, -@ BeingSalmanKhan with gods blessings is freed today from a hanging sword for thirteen years. cheers (sic)” while actor Kirron Kher told a news channel, “As a film industry person and a friend I’m very happy, relieved. May God bless him.” Actor Tusshar Kapoor said, “I think this is the best news for the country, his fans and the industry.” Fans also gathered outside Galaxy Apartments, Salman’s residence in Bandra, Mumbai, to celebrate his acquittal.

While congratulatory messages poured in, there were also a few who did not seem to support the court’s decision, which was announced on Human Rights Day. “Salman acquitted by all his charges on the #HumanRightsDay, People don’t even feel the shame #SalmanVerdict,” posted a Twitter user Chinmay Sane , while Vijay Negi posted, “Finally we know ! The car was drunk (sic).” Another user, Rahul Roushan writes, “In the black buck shooting case, I guess the verdict should conclude that black bucks are not reliable.” @iam_ balaa writes, “Set back for Google, in 2002 Salman invented a self driven car in India. #SalmanVerdict.”
