Winter is the perfect time to indulge in the culinary delights of Delhi, from the chaats, paranthas to the quintessential winter delight — gajar ka halwa. But if you are conscious of the extra calories that these delicacies have and are also looking to try out something different, then you can give a thought to some of the fruit-based snacks that some eateries in the city sell.

If you’ve ever wondered how life would look if everything was in a monochrome pallete, a photo art exhibition in town might help fire your imagination. Titled 36 Shades of Grey, the exhibition by CAMERAunLIMITED, will showcase 6 artists including Monidipa Dey, Ravi Shail and Rashmi Rai who will present six works each to create a 36 frame film roll-like appeal. These works will be exploring themes like ancient ruins, lesser inhabited lands, daily life and much more.

The exhibition is an effort to blend the works of established and upcoming photographers, by showcasing their talent on a common platform. Ravi Dhingra, curator of the show, feels that life has infinite shades of grey and it is only when you explore these tones that you see the world in a diverse light. “Photography started in monochrome style, and while it has developed over time, with the advent of the digital era and color photography, the monochrome format remains the hardest and the most diverse in terms of tonality. As hard as it is to execute it beautifully, it also holds a certain edge that always seems to attract someone who admires photography with its wall art type appeal,” he says.

Talking further about the exhibition, Dhingra adds, “We went through a selection process and finalised these six artists, as they have diverse backgrounds and a very mature sense when it comes to the fine art of photography.” Bazaar in Old Delhi, this eatery was set up around 70 years ago. Apart from samosa and tea, fruit sandwiches have been the joint’s mainstay since its inception. Set up by S D Jain, and now managed by his sons Pawan and Anil Kumar Jain, the eatery stays open from morning 10 to eight in the evening. They offer mixed fruits, chiku, apple, pineapple, banana and mango sandwiches. The sandwiches are reasonably priced between ` 30 and ` 60.

Kulle chaat at Heera Lal Chaat Corner

Mukut Bihari, a third generation chaat seller from the bylanes of Chandni Chowk, claims that he invented the kulle chaat, which is priced at ` 50. He craftly scoops out a portion of mixed fruits and fills them with channa, pomegranate, salt and chaat masala. The chaat corner also sells the regular aloo tikki and aloo chat.

Banana parantha at Gali Paranthe Wali

If you think you can find fusion cooking only in fivestar hotels, then think again, as the paranthas of this century-old food lane has now

started exploring this food genre. Ravi Sharma, the sixth generation owner of a paranthe shop in the Pt Babu Ram Devi Dayal lane, says that they introduced the banana parantha around five years ago, and it’s in great demand among the foreign tourists. The stuffing comprises of kaju and kishmish, apart from banana.

Chips and lassi

It’s not just Old Delhi that offers fruit-based fare. If you’re someone who loves banana chips from the South, there are many shops in Karol Bagh where you can find the snack. There’s also fruit lassi that you can enjoy at Shammi Bhai Lassi Wala at Kingsway Camp.
