SAINA THRILLED ABOUT BIOPIC
After big wins this year, Indian shuttler Saina Nehwal says a biopic on her is well timed
It was a great year for Saina Nehwal as she became the first Indian female badminton player to get to the world number one ranking. She also won two tournaments besides reaching the finals of the All-England Championship and the World Championship for the first time. An official biopic has also been announced on her. We talk to the 25-year-old on career, films, etc.
You had a fantastic 2015. How do you rate your performances?
I am happy to have won two gold medals for India in Modi Grand Prix and India Super Series. I also won three silver medals in the three most important tournaments of the world of badminton though it’s unfortunate that I failed to be the winner in all three. But I also became world number one and was nominated for the Player of the Year honour in badminton (women’s category). In fact, I was happy to snatch the win from Wang Yihan (Chinese player) to whom I lost several times in the past. Towards the end of year, I also defeated Carolina Marin (Spanish player) in Dubai. So it was a satisfying year.
A biopic on you is on the cards. Are you excited or nervous?
Yes, I am very happy that the biopic is being made on my achievements in the badminton world. Why should I be nervous?
Since you are still playing, do you feel that it could be too early to have a biopic on you?
I don’t think so. People must know about my struggles, and how I have progressed in the world of badminton. And if some of them pursue it (after watching the film), I will be very happy (smiles).
Is it a good idea to have biopics on sportspersons?
As far as I understand, there must be gripping material in such biopics for filmmakers; and that’s why they are tempted to make biopics on sportspersons.
