COLOMBIANS DON'T GET OFFENDED: SOFIA
Says Sofia Vergara, talking about her character and jokes on her hit American show, Modern Family
Colombian-American actor Sofia Vergara is popular for playing a feisty Colombian, Gloria Delgado-Pritchett, in the popular American TV series, Modern Family. The show revolves around three different, but related families that face trials and tribulations in their own comedic ways.
Vergara’s role has won her four nominations for the ‘Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series’ award at the Emmys so far!
Here are excerpts from an interview where the 45-year-old talks about the show and her character.
Why do you think Modern Family is such a success?
It is a combination of many things. It is luck, first of all! I think also we have a great cast (including Ariel Winter and TY Burrell). We all have this chemistry. The writers are amazing, Chris Lloyd and Steven Levitan, the creators, they know exactly what they want from the show. So it’s mainly, you know, good luck.
But did you imagine that it would be among one of the most watched shows?
You never know with TV. But to be, you know, like one of the most watched shows right now, it’s like totally, for all of us, it’s unbelievable.
How important is it that the character is Colombian? And what do you think of the jokes about Colombia on the show?
When I read the script, I thought, this is a great character for me. It’s perfect! I get to be Colombian. I love it. Colombians, we don’t get offended because it’s not like they are inventing things. It’s a reality of what Colombia was and what we can do? We have to laugh about it.
So, do you get recognised a lot on the street by fans? What sort of reactions do you get?
You know what, I think in person, I look a little bit smaller than on the TV. So people just stare and stare, like she is. Maybe she is not. As long as I don’t speak, I’m safe (laughs).
You look great, and what do you do to stay in shape?
When I moved to Los Angeles for acting, I understood that, working out and eating healthier was part of ageing well. So, I accepted it. I hate it. For me, it’s torture to go to the gym. Like I’m in a bad mood before I’m going, while I’m doing it. I mean, I hate my trainer. It’s like... but then, you know, it’s a reality.
