ALL ABOUT BRAIN STROKE

- What is a stroke? What are its symptoms? How to prevent it? Timely diagnosis Treatment options HTC HTC

Despite not causing identifiable symptoms, a silent stroke can cause damage to the brain. While strokes are very common and can be fatal, public awareness about it is very low. Sr. Consultant and Chief of Neurology Service at Indian Spinal Injuries Centre, Dr AK Sahani will shed some light on this debilitating disorder. A stroke (also known as brain attack) occurs when the vessels supplying blood to the brain are blocked, interrupting the blood flow. This results in the death of the brain cells. To avoid misdiagnosis, it is important to know about the symptoms too. Weakness of limbs, facial deviation, slurring of speech or inability to speak, numbness of one side, incoordination of hand, and unsteady gait are the common symptoms to look out for. One must stop smoking. It leads to fatty deposits in the blood vessels, which slow down the blood flow, resulting in a stroke. Control your blood pressure as BP consistently higher than 140 over 90 can cause damage. Control cholesterol levels as high levels have been associated with (ischemic) stroke. Limit saturated fats and trans fats in your diet. One must moderate alcohol consumption. If you have diabetes, keep blood sugar under control as diabetes causes small vessels to close prematurely. There could be a genetic component too, so keep your family history in mind. Timely investigation of stroke is imperative. CT scan, MRI CT, and angiography of the brain are the common detection tools. Common treatment methods include thrombolysis, mechanical thrombectomy, prescription of anti-platelet drugs, statins, and antihypertensive drugs, along with physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
