IS RED THE NEW BLACK WHEN IT COMES TO RED CARPET APPEARANCES?
Fashion soirées across the world are witnessing a shift in the style of celebrities — looks like they are done with playing safe and opting for black; now they are painting the town RED!
At a recent red carpet event, Anushka Sharma was spotted in a red power suit that became a talking point and hit the style radar instantly. Similarly, we saw Mandira Bedi go for a red cut-out dress by Gaurav Gupta for a fashion event the same night. Hollywood stars like Dakota Johnson, Jessica Chastin and model Karlie Kloss also opted for red on the red carpet this month. This raised a question, is red the new black when it comes to red carpet appearances?
“Red denotes power and assertiveness and that’s why women like going for red. Also red is an impactful colour and something that will not be forgotten easily,” says designer Nachiket Barve. Agrees designer Nishka Lulla who says its officially the colour for Fall 2017. “Red is striking, versatile and has made a comeback in India and is also a hit internationally, this winter,” she adds.
Going back a few months, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan also walked the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival in a red Ralph & Russo Couture gown with a sweetheart neckline and a tiered skirt while Bollywood’s favourite fashionista Deepika Padukone went for a long-sleeved red fishtail gown by Stella McCartney at the European premiere of xXx: Return of Xander Cage.
Heidi Klum, Nicole Kidman, Gina Rodriguez, Yvonne Strahovski and Keri Russell all went for variations of red at the Emmy’s this year.
There was a time when fashionista’s were afraid to go for red as it camouflaged with the carpet. However, designers feel that stars are now more comfortable and experimental, not wanting to abide by any rules.
When it comes to red on the red carpet, it is tricky and picking the right shade is important. “It is important to choose the right shade of red. Deeper reds are great for a dusky woman while crimson can be great if you have pale skin. Avoid the exact same red as the red carpet,” recommends Barve.
“While styling a red ensemble, one must make sure that the colour is the focus point. Monotone is the best way to go. However, if you want to colour block, make sure it blends well and is not high contrast like red with black, white or even hot pink,” suggest Lulla.
Well, now that so many celebs have shown thumbs up to the colour red, opting for a complementing hue won’t be a bad idea this party season!
