Singer Kavita Seth, who has songs such as Jeete Hain Chal (Neerja; 2016) and Iktara (Wake Up Sid; 2009), to her credit, is disappointed with the liking Bollywood has taken to rehashing old songs.

“Music companies, today, aren’t ready to take any risks. They just think ‘Ek puraana gaana le lo, do nayi lines daal do aur recreate kar do’. But everything’s good only up to a limit. When you overdo it, it is no longer enjoyable,” she says.

2017 was full of such rehashed hits—Oonchi Hai Building (Judwaa 2), Laila Main Laila (Raees), and Neend Churayi Meri (Golmaal Again), to name a few.

“Earlier, I felt the trend was good, because this way today’s generation would listen to the old hit songs, and the essence would remain intact. But it’s become too much now. Even for TV serials, or any film, the makers think ‘Puraane gaane se utha lo.’ What is this? Kya humari creativity khatam ho gayi hai? Ajeeb sa market ho gaya hai,” she rues.

She emphasises on taking it slow, when it comes to creative output of any kind. “Aamir (Khan) takes one-two years to come out with a film, therefore they are all hits. Earlier, there used be rehearsals for months for a song, but today, people say, ‘Kavita ji, ek gaana gaa dijiye’. You’ve to learn and sing it at the same time. Jaan kahaan se aayegi gaanon mein?” says Kavita.
