Stage time helped Sudhir Mishra rap

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra’s rap song in his latest, Daas Dev, caught everyone’s attention. The Hindi-English song was received well and Mishra is happy with the response his foray into singing got him and the film. The Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi (2003) director, however, doesn’t feel he is cut out for it.

“I may or may not [do it again]. This film was different, and the idea came from my friend Anshu Sharma. The Hindi lyrics had been planned by Gaurav Solanki. Saurabh Shukla was to be a part of the song, but then he convinced me to be a part of it as well,” Mishra explains.

“I’d done acting on the stage, and that helped. In a way, it was a different experience, but I don’t think it is my cup of tea. I don’t imagine myself as a singer or actor,” he says. Mishra, who has worked on classics such as Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro (1983) and Mohan Joshi Hazir Ho! (1984), and directed the acclaimed Chameli (2003) and Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011), says he enjoys writing and directing, more.

“When I am conceptualising and writing the film… then when the film goes on floors, then the phase when the music is worked on, before we go into post-production,” says the filmmaker, who is busy making content for the web, at the moment.
