‘If my heart tells me to go ahead, I don’t think twice’

Actors often open up about different factors that drive them to say ‘yes’ to a project. And for actor Sharman Joshi — every time that he is being offered a film — listening to his heart does the trick.

He confesses that there is “no further calculation” involved on whether the film will work or not, or who all, other than him, are a part of the project, etc.

“When I am offered a film and the story is being narrated, if my heart tells me to go ahead with the project, I don’t think twice. And at that time I don’t think about anything else,” says the actor, who is known for his films such as Godmother (1999), Style (2001), Rang De Basanti (2006), Life in a... Metro (2007), 3 Idiots (2009), Ferrari Ki Sawaari (2012) and 3 Storeys.

But how does he deal with commercial failure if any, in case, the film that he chose, tanks at the boxoffice after release? Sharman explains, “It hurts when a film fails. And it isn’t easy to overcome the sadness because after all it’s your labour of love and you have worked hard on it. Over the years I have learnt to cope up with the pain. Success and failure are part of our journey, the best way ahead is to forget and start getting ready for the next run hoping that this would go better.”

The actor, at the same time, also asserts that it is not possible to explain the [one particular] reason on why a film worked or not. He says,“Other than hard work, I feel it’s divine blessings or some kind of magic that helps a film do well. For me, the journey of making the film is important and enriching.”

“The kind of learning that happens while working with different people helps me grow. I don’t regret doing any of the films that I have done so far,” says Sharman, who will be seen next in Kaashi in Search of Ganga.
