ACTING IS FREELANCING, SAYS RADHIKA

Radhika Apte says that actors are always in sort of a rat race, and the pressure of it makes them feel anxious

Actor Radhika Apte feels that every actor is anxious about their career, and attributes it to the insecurity which arises due to the nature of the job.

The 33-year-old says, “It comes from insecurity, and that constant pressure of being in the sort of a rat race. I, too, have that. We, as actors, do get the feeling, in terms of, ‘oh my God, what will happen next?’ and those kind of things. I think that’s a part of the job, because it is a freelancing job. So, if you are an actor, musician or a painter, you will have that insecurity about whether you will get the next job or not.”

However, sometimes it is very important to say “no”, feels Radhika, as “it is very important for artists to take time off their work”. “It is very important to say no. You can’t just spend yourself, and then have nothing substantial to offer. When you are exhausted, it is important that you take some time off to gain some strength, both physical and mental,” says Radhika, who features on the web show, titled Ghoul.

Although Radhika wants to be part of projects with “good content”, she wants to be part of out-and-out commercial projects just as well. “I think it’s wrong to underestimate anything, and it’s sort of wrong to underestimate the power of commercially-viable projects. Sometimes you need them,” she says.

The actor aims at a ‘balance’ in her film choices. She explains, “Of course, I am not a big fan of running around trees and singing, but I think that doesn’t happen anymore. And a few films where it does happen, I will not be a part of it. Simple. But you need your movies, to work and recover money. There needs to be a fine balance between the two.”
