Sorry style: Is sari losing its essence due to innovation?

How much is too much when it comes to experimenting with saris? We ask experts

The most exquisite piece in every woman’s wardrobe is a sari. The six yards spell grandeur and tradition in the best way possible. The garment has different draping styles as we move along the length and breadth of India. However, today, saris seem to be losing their essence, say many veterans.

Fashion designers insist that the idea behind experimenting with saris is to make them more wearable for the younger generation. But, are fashionistas going ‘too far’ to make it a popular piece of fashion? Some say that the most crucial point while getting playful with a sari is to make sure that it does not lose its essence.

“Experimenting with a sari is very good and fun but when someone tries to do too much with it then it can make it look awkward. Even slight modification can make it very interesting. When one experiments with everything, from the draping to the blouse, it’s too many elements at the same time,” says designer Gautam Gupta.

Agrees designer Ridhi Mehra who loves the classic look of a sari. “Typical sari looks the best. It is beautiful. However, experimenting is good but it should be as close to a classic sari as possible. Adding a fringed jacket or a cape to the basic sari is the best way to add that modern touch,” adds Mehra.

However, designer Anupamaa Dayal believes that nothing is too much. “Nothing is too much. Experimentation is important if we are to keep the sari relevant. If we don’t, the sari will risk becoming a museum piece. Aesthetic appeal and practicality must be central when we play with drapes or tweak the ensemble separates,” says Dayal.
