Love theatre? Then this Hindi theatre fest in town is for you
If you have a keen interest in Hindi theatre and have been looking for your fix, an upcoming theatre festival might give you just that. Organised by BelaTheatre Karwaan, the Mohd Waseem Azad Theatre Festival is set to bring popular plays to Delhi, in memory of actor and founder Mohd Waseem Azad. Azad set up the theatre in 1999 with an aim to promote and enrich theatre in the city.
The festival will feature five plays performed over three days in two auditoriums, namely, Ghalib in New Delhi, Taj Mahal Ka Tender, Aadhe Adhure, Baap Re Baap: Baap Mauj Mein- Beta Khoj Mein, and Chandragupta.
“The Mohd Waseem Azad Theatre Festival will be bringing some of the finest plays for Delhi viewers. Each play is iconic in their own way, and we are sure everyone who visits will enjoy what we have put together,”says Amar Shah, of BelaTheatre Karwaan.
Ghalib in New Delhi, India’s longest running comedy play, is an extremely funny account of the 19th century poet Mirza Ghalib’s re-birth in the 21st century India. Meanwhile, Taj Mahal Ka Tender is an everentertaining performance that pitches Mughal ruler Shahjahan against the corrupt system of modern society.
The play Aadhe Adhure will focus on Savitri, one of Hindi theatre’s first feminist icons and her search for fulfilment in relationships outside marriage, and Baap Re Baap is a comedy of errors that is also an ode to Charlie Chaplin.
Those with an inclination for history, can catch Chandragupta, which shows the journey of Chandragupta Maurya from a commoner to the king of Magadh.
Excited? So are we.
