It is widely believed that in the film industry, visibility translates to work, but actor Yami Gautam does not agree. She instead feels that in trying to conform to some perception and be seen at every public event, one should not lose one’s own self.

“That is not how I am as a person. That is not how I got the films. It differs from person to person. Yes, there are times when I go to parties. You have to be comfortable about your personality. You don’t have to be someone who people expect you to become. You don’t have to follow any perception. Your essence as a person shouldn’t change. There is room for everybody in the industry,” explains Yami.

The actor says she is not a “very socially active person” anyway and she has made peace with it, which people should respect. “Who I am friends within the industry is something which is part of personal space. I don’t like to talk about it. But all my best friends are from my school. I am very reserved and an introvert. I take time to open up. I was joking with an actress that initially I would meet people and just say ‘Hmmm’, and now at least I can say ‘Hey’. I think that’s fine. It is a personal choice,” says Yami.

Basking in the success of Uri: The Surgical Strike, which has opened to a positive response and has her playing an intelligence officer, Yami says she couldn’t have asked for a better start to the year. “It’s rewarding as an actor when you come from a weekend of a release to know the business of the film has been commendable and that the audiences have loved the work that has been put in both by the team and you. I’m happy that I got to dabble in a different kind of a role and that the director, Aditya (Dhar, Uri’s director) believed in me,” the actor says.
