Amid so many award shows that keep the Bollywood calendar packed throughout the year, singer-songwriter Badshah is unhappy with the lack of “legit music awards” in the country. According to the singer, dedicated music awards can “encourage a musician to do better than what they are doing” right now.

“I am disheartened to see there are no legit music awards that we could look up to,” says Badshah, adding that it’s a “shame that despite the fact that the film industry is driven by song and dance, there is no good platform, which encourages and recognises talent.”

The singer, who recently produced music for the Punjabi film, Do Dooni Panj, argues that no one makes “music to get awards”, but awards help push artists in the right direction. “No one starts composing music to win an award. But, just imagine the push they might get if there is a legit system which recognises them, and encourages them to keep getting better at what they are doing,” Badshah says.

He continues, “Look at the hip-hop scene in India and the way it is emerging right now. Imagine the push that a rapper will get if there are awards, which are respected and are looked up to. These things give an artist confidence that people appreciate their music.”
