Conventional movies don’t come my way: Shilpa Shukla

- Rishabh Suri rishabh.suri@htlive.com

Actor Shilpa Shukla made a big impact with her role in Chak De! India (2007) and then went on to star in BA Pass (2012), for which she got critical acclaim. In both the films, however, the role pitched to her was that of the antagonist in the story.

Ask Shilpa if she has got fed up of playing negative roles that come her way quite often, she says, “I am grateful that they have come my way. Everyone can tell a positive story, but how do you tell a story which can get negative? I am definitely trying to experiment. My first film was Khamosh Paani (2003), and didn’t see me in a negative character. There are so many characters developing in us, the script should awaken them.”

Shilpa hasn’t starred in a masala Hindi film, as they are popularly referred to, and it doesn’t even bother her. “The conventional movies don’t come my way, the movie script chooses me. Whenever I am looking at a character with grey shades, I always look for a point of redemption in it. Everyone has the right to be redeemed, it doesn’t matter how bad they are. That’s what I look at sometimes in a role,” says the actor, who was recently seen in Bombairiya.

Talking about her role in the film and what is lined up next for her this year, the actor says, “I have a short cameo in it. I am hopeful it does well; it’s been made by a first-time director. There’s another film called Love, which is a very interesting love story, and is there in a surreal space. I have also been getting calls for working on the web, and hopefully something should open up. I am waiting patiently for the right opportunity.”
