I wish to have 5-6 classics in different genres, says Kartik

He made his big screen debut with Pyaar Ka Punchnama, in 2011. But Kartik Aaryan has come into his own only now with the runaway success of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety (SKTKS; 2018). Even though many dub it as an overnight success, he has an interesting take to it. “For me, that one night has been seven years long (laughs),” he says.

But Kartik admits that things have become dream-like. “I will be shooting for some really exciting projects this year. Every actor uses his/her gut feeling [while choosing films], and the same holds true for me too. So, I made full use of whatever offers I had. But after SKTKS, I am bombarded with offers, which I never had, so I’ve a lot of options,” he says.

Now, Kartik’s only aim is to zero in on the “right films”. “And not just in terms of content but box office as well. That’s the only concern because honestly, I’ve achieved everything after a lot of hard work. But it’s heartening that today’s audience has matured a lot. So when a film like AndhaDhun (2018) does so well, it makes you feel more empowered as an actor. It proves that content is indeed the king and that’s why cinema is changing,” says the actor, who is readying for the release of Luka Chuppi.

“It’s my fastest film till date as we wrapped it in just one schedule. Our director, Laxman Utekar is a lot of fun, and so is Kriti [Sanon]. I never really required those icebreaking sessions etc., with her. I loved working with Kriti,” he says. Till date, most of his films can be put in the rom-com or comedy space but Kartik feels he can do “emotional scenes very well”, too.

“Going ahead, alag alag space ki films karna chahta hoon but I also want to keep my comedy waali gaadi running. I’d love to do something like a Badlapur (2015) or the Golmaal series. So, if Punchnama series is a sort of classic for collegegoers, I should have fivesix classic films from different genres in my name, in the next five years,” he says.
