Dear Molly was a dream debut, feels Gurbani Gill
It’s not everyday that you get to start your career with a film that is screened at the Oscars. Gurbani Gill is one such lucky debutante. The New York-born Punjabi actor’s debut film, Dear Molly (2018), helmed by Gajendra Ahire, was screened for the Oscar jury last year in Los Angeles. This IndoSwedish collaboration, which narrates the story of a father and daughter, also got screened in various other festivals.
The film never made it to the final Oscar list, but she is not disappointed. “We are grateful it got recognition on such a massive and competitive platform, where the best of the best come. This was my first film and we just made it with all our heart, for it to be shortlisted [for the Oscars] is an award in itself! The reaction [at the screening] was positive,” she says.
Talking about her experience of working with the National Awardwinning director, Gurbani adds he is very spontaneous and creative. “Gajendra sir creates very raw and effortless characters. Not only did he expose me in this side of the craft but helped me unlearn alot! I would love to work under his guidance again,” adds the actor, from Anupam Kher’s acting school.
Did Anupam watch the film? “Anupam sir is shooting out of India and then he was busy with his own film. I haven’t had the chance to meet him in between. But whatever I learned from him will stay with me,” she adds.
Gurbani is now eyeing Bollywood. She has done screen tests and is taking workshops to hone her skills. As an actor, she is open to doing web series and TV. “Good roles in any medium is welcome,” she adds.
