Of late, many actors have voiced their concern over the quality of content on TV. Actor Rajesh Kumar, who shot to fame as Rosesh in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai, agrees that in order to churn out content at a fast pace and on small budgets, makers compromise on quality by hiring people without the requisite skills.

“Mediocrity has seeped into TV so much... The market scenario is such that there isn’t a lot of money in the industry except for a few projects. To fit into the budget, the makers would hire two main big actors with good face value but for the supporting cast, they would hire new actors who are willing to work for less money. Thus, the industry is full of mediocre people,” says Rajesh, who also has shows such as Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Des Mein Niklla Hoga Chand, Kkusum, Khichdi, and Baa Bahoo Aur Baby, to his credit.

The actor points out that experience doesn’t necessarily mean efficiency. “You might have one year of experience and yet be very efficient and do the job very easily. Or you might have 10 years of experience but could be unable to do your job. There are a lot of people in the industry who are inefficient at their work,” Rajesh says.

Having people with weak skills also hurts on the set, says Rajesh. “Inefficient people lack the temperament and expertise to handle the situation well. They make the situation worse. You are thinking that you are saving money by hiring people at low salaries but when they are supposed to perform, they are an absolute disaster,” the actor shares.

Such situations, Rajesh adds, are very stressful. “I feel when you shoot a TV show and invest a lot of time in its making, it will transform TV completely. If you give priority to quality content and shoot it efficiently, it will make a lot of difference,” he concludes.
