It’s never too late to get good work and be lauded for it. And Meera Chopra is glad that she has finally been able to get rid of the ‘glamorous’ image that had got stuck to her. With a body of work that includes mainly Tamil and Telugu films, and a few Hindi projects, she was recently seen in the hard-hitting drama, Section 375, where she played a rape victim.

“My career has been very slow in terms of Bollywood,” she candidly admits, “I was scouting for something good in the last two and a half years. I wasn’t comfortable doing just anything. It should give meaning to my life also. I should feel proud of it. Even Section 375 didn’t come my way on its own, I was called for an audition and went through six rounds!”

Meera further adds how she was always typecast in glamorous roles. “Don’t know why

I was getting a lot of eroticas. This one director said ‘you’re not going to get work because you’re saying no to work which suits you’. I was like ‘excuse me?’ I sent him a message saying ‘I’ll prove you wrong’. I hope I did that with Section 375,” she says.

The Gang of Ghosts (2014) actor adds, “It’s never about looks, but talent; what you can do onscreen. Whatever reactions I’ve got, have been amazing. Typecast karna Bollywood ki puraani aadat hai. Jaise dikhte ho, vaisa hi role milega.”

In her next, which is a web series, Meera plays a cop and she’s aiming to change her image even further with that. “It’s based on Kamathipura, the biggest red-light area in Mumbai. It’s about girls being forced into prostitution, and when they say ‘no’ they’re brutally killed. It’s based on real stories. I play a cop and I’ve got the pulse of what I want to do as an actor.”
