‘Heroes do the major chunk in films, heroines still second fiddle’

Actors today are not worried about being inactive on the film front because they have the web to their rescue. Isha Koppikar believes it is giving “a new lease of life to good actors” as the scenario in Hindi films isn’t good for female actors.

“I have turned down around 50 films in the last five years,” reveals the 43-year old, who has been part of films such as Aamdani Atthanni Kharcha Rupaiya (2001) and Krishna Cottage (2004). “What happens here is that not many femaleoriented scripts are being made. In most of the films, heroes do the major chunk, and women are just the second fiddle to them. In the very few films, (which) are heroinecentric, the directors are very clear about who they exactly want. Nepotism boliye, koi bhi ism boliye, these are the kind of things I don’t want to be a part of,” she says.

What she is happy about is that the focus is now on making better films rather than merely star-driven projects. “..That Friday, Saturday, Sunday — that’s full mostly because of heroes, but after that it’s because of your script. A lot of small-budget films and experimental cinema are doing so well as compared to the bigbudget films. Everything is

changing right now. People are more concerned about scripts rather than brands and names,” she says.

She is currently seen in a web series, alongside Shabir Ahluwalia, and will also be seen as a Punjabi girl in another web series Lovely Da Dhaba. Happy with the variety she has on her plate right now, the actor says, “I am also working in a south Indian film, in which I have an actionpacked role on the lines of Lara Croft. In the web series with Shabir, I play a cop.”
