People are asking me, ‘Have you broken up?’ and I’m like, ‘No, don’t misunderstand, it’s not my breakup’.

ARMAAN MALIK SINGER

You’ve heard him croon to mushy, romantic tracks such as Bol Do Na Zara and Hua Hai Aaj Pehli Baar, but singer Armaan Malik has never sung a breakup song. This realisation germinated into Armaan’s latest song, Tootey Khab, in which he plays a guy dealing with a breakup with his girlfriend.

The singer feels that relationships have become very “fickle” nowadays. He says, “No one has heard me sing a heart break song. Love mein aisa nahi hai ki every day is going to be rosy, nice and happy. There are going to be days when you will experience a heart break. My basic inspiration was from friends and how they’ve handled relationships which have become very fickle — aaj pyaar hai, kal nahi hai. I wanted to capture that feeling among today’s generation.”

In the video, a girl is shown breaking up with Armaan over a text and we wonder if it’s inspired from any real life incident. Quick to refute any such similarities, he says, “People are asking me, ‘Have you broken up?’ and I’m like, ‘No, don’t misunderstand, it’s not my breakup’. Obviously, breakups happen to everyone in their life. I wanted to put out a song which is relatable. People have been messaging me — this is like my real life. Breakups are so common these days.”

The 24-year-old agrees that depression among youngsters is on the rise, and heartbreak is one of the reasons behind it.“There are people who go into a shell, and don’t want to come out of that. I used that in the video of my song. My character releases a song six months after the breakup. It becomes a hit, and then the girl who had broken his heart messages him, ‘I miss who we were together’, hinting at a possibility of getting back together. In the video, I read the message, smile, shut my phone, and enter the tour bus which says Breakup Tour. In the song, my message is that one should not be bogged down by breakup, or think life is going down the drain. Life isn’t worthless after a breakup, it’s what you make out of it after that,” he says.
