WHAT IS A CATARACT?

A cataract is a gradual clouding of the natural lens of the eye, affecting most people sooner or later. In fact, many people over the age of 50 have some form of cataract.

MODERN CATARACT TREATMENT

A cataract cannot be treated with medication or corrected with eyeglasses. The cloudy cataract lens must be surgically removed. Cataract surgery is the most frequently performed surgical procedure in the world. It is widely regarded as safe and effective.

The cloudy natural lens is gently removed through a tiny incision at the edge of the cornea. It is replaced by a very small artificial lens (called an intraocular lens) that is implanted through the same incision.

Femtosecond Laser technology is the latest and best technology for cataract surgery available throughout the world. This bladeless, stitch less technique for cataract surgery delivers precise results and is a boon for the patient. It has significantly automated the complicated steps of cataract surgery

CAN DEPENDENCE ON GLASSES BE REDUCED AFTER CATARACT SURGERY?

During cataract surgery, the natural lens is replaced by an artificial lens which can be of following types:

1. Monofocal IOL: It gives good distance vision. But you will still need to wear glasses for reading and computer work even after the surgery.

2. Premium Monofocal IOL: These are aspheric high definition lenses which improve not only your quantity of vision, but also the quality in the form of contrast sensitivity, ability to see in dim light conditions and picture quality. Being Monofocal, you still need to wear glasses while reading or working on computer.

3. Multifocal IOL: These lenses provide you good spectacle-free vision for your routine day to day activities for most distances. Some patients may require reading additional glasses for fine print reading. Some patients may experience glare and halos, especially while night driving.

4. Newer multifocal IOL :It has been able to address the concerns with the first generation multifocal lenses, thus reducing glare and halos as with extended depth of focus lenses or trifocal intraocular lenses. It thus enhances the possibility of seeing clearly across the entire vision range including sports, computer work, using mobiles or reading newspapers.

In around 30% people, the front surface of eye called cornea is one of the chief determinants of the power of the lens to be implanted in an individual, is egg-shaped or baseball like in shape unlike the usual perfect circular or spherical shape. This is also known as Astigmatism. Modern Cataract surgery aims to reduce spectacle dependence. In case of Astigmatism, special intraocular lenses called toric lenses are recommended. The same is available in multifocal and trifocal versions as well. Thus with the latest micro and femto techniques of surgery combined with advanced technology powered intraocular lenses, you can gain youthful vision.
