‘DIDN’T AUDITION FOR MY SECOND FILM’
Says Banita Sandhu who credits Shoojit Sircar’s understanding of her capability for the same
She made an impactful debut with October last year and with Sardar Udham Singh, actor Banita Sandhu is all set to repeat the magic. What makes it even special is that the upcoming film will be a reunion with Shoojit Sircar, who was also the director of her very first film.
“I always knew Shoojit sir was doing this film since our first film, but I never thought I’d be able to have a part in it. Then, he called me while I was shooting for a US TV show, Pandora, and said he has managed to find a way to fit me in. I was really flattered; as a Punjabi I’m really excited about this film,” Banita shares.
Unlike her first film, the actor didn’t have to give an audition for this one.
“I feel really fortunate that I have the kind of equation with Shoojit sir where he knows my capabilities and what he is able to get out of me as an actor. Thus, I didn’t have to audition for this one,” Banita says. At 21, the actor is already hogging all the limelight for her performance in Tamil film
Adithya Varma which is the remake of Telugu film Arjun Reddy (2017).
But working on this film was no less than a roller coaster ride. Especially, when the production house decided to drop director Bala’s version of the movie weeks before its release and reshoot the entire film with actor Dhruv and the new cast by director Gireesaaya. For Banita, this film opened the doors of South cinema and she is happy with the reaction it garnered from the audience.
“Luckily, since the film released, we actually haven’t faced many controversies. I think it’s because Dhruv and I were so open about addressing certain aspects of the film, be it nepotism or misogyny. I’ve even read a few reviews observing the difference I made in the female lead to be more invested and interested in Dhruv’s character. I’ve also received a lot of messages from female viewers saying they felt more comfortable watching the film this time around. That means the world to me and makes me feel like my part in the film was worthwhile,” Banita concludes.
