The year 2019 has marked the arrival of many star kids on the big screen. Vardhan Puri, grandson of late veteran actor Amrish Puri, also made his foray into Bollywood with romantic thriller, Yeh Saali Aashiqui. Though the film didn’t create much buzz, the actor considers it to be a great stepping stone into showbiz.

“Every actor’s dream is to have a hit film. But honestly, how a film does is not in our hands. It is on the audience’s part to decide whether they would like to watch it in the theatres or not. My job was to give my 100% and I just hope to do so in future, too. It’s only going to motivate me to work harder next time. I aspire to do more impactful, entertaining work,” Vardhan says.

Not getting caught up in the box office game, Vardhan says, “I’ve realised that the business and the numbers are not controlled by us. We all give a lot of importance to numbers, but as actors, we need to focus on our performance. I’m looking for love and respect for the film, and qualitative work matters more than quantitative work for me.”

The actor, who has been doing theatre since childhood, recalls the first time he had given his audition. “I went to casting director Mukesh Chabbra with some pictures that my friends had clicked on phone. I learnt that my acting was too loud and not suited for films. I remember that he told me, ‘You are a good actor but your acting is too theatrical. You need to learn subtlety.’ At that time I thought I need to work behind the camera to understand the process of filmmaking. So, I worked as an assistant director (AD) in films” During that period, Vardhan learnt about the nuances of acting in films, and continued to appear for auditions. The actor finds auditions to be a “great acting school.” He says, “I believe I’ve given more than 1200 auditions in my life. I believe the more you give auditions, the better you polish your skills. You get immediate feedback... The best part was, though I used to stand in long queues for my turn, whenever I was pressed for time, other actors were so understanding that they used to allow me to skip the queues and give auditions first.”
