Is your social media also flooded with pictures of your friends with reflectors on in the snow, and fancy captions? These snaps can give anyone who is slogging in their offices, a complex. Weather it’s a birthday, a celebration, festivals or the New Year’s Eve, Delhiites love to step outside the city for a break. But, due to the worsening weather conditions in Delhi, those who are supposed to leave on December 30 are cancelling their plans. Some flights and trains have got cancelled and many are delayed.

“Fog is not the only reason we are cancelling our trip, but the traffic conditions and over booked restaurants in Himachal Pradesh have also contributed to us cancelling our trip. My friend who had gone to Shimla two days ago, was stuck in traffic near Mandi for five hours. I am better here with my family. We could go to a party or organise one of our own,” says Mohit Kakkar, a Delhiite who works with an MNC.

Delhi’s famous sardi also caught the eye of YouTuber Bhuvan Bam, who, too, jokingly commented on actor Anushka Sharma’s Instagram picture from Gstaad, Switzerland. He says, ‘Why did you go to the hills? Delhi is freezing right now! Idhar aa jaate. Chole bhature bhi kha lete sab! (sic).”

Gayatri Manchanda, a resident of Gurugram, and a writer and painter, who has been celebrating New Year in Bhimtal, Uttarakhand, for many years had to change her plans this year. She says, “We have been going to the hills, Bhimtal for last few years on New Year’s Eve or during the first week of January to witness the snowfall, but we cancelled this time due to fog and extreme conditions. My sister and her family have done the same. For them, it was a ritual of several years.” Delhi-based freelance photographer, Debashish Baidya also cancelled his road trip. He had plans to go to Rajasthan, but alas Delhi’s fog had other plans. “I was going to go on a bike trip for five to six days, and was going to extend it for a few days but it’s so cold outside that I had to cancel it. New Year hi time hota hain nikalne ka trips pe or celebrate karne ka.

But this year’s cold is mind boggling. Now, I’m just chilling at home, and will tag along at my friends’ house parties for the new year.”

Yatin Wadhwa, a businessman from Delhi, who too, had a change of plans thanks to Delhi’s blistering cold, says: “I had plans to go to Manali, Himachal Pradesh, on December 30 by car, but seeing so much fog this morning, I had to cancel it as it just doesn’t seem feasible to drive in such dense fog. Also, Manali wali
