‘Was happy, worried on my son’s debut’
She might have been missing from the Bollywood scene for some time, but actor Bhagyashree found herself in the limelight again when news spread that her son, Abhimanyu Dassani, is the new star kid on the block. Abhimanyu made his debut with Mard Ko Dard Nahi Hota (2018), and his next film is Nikamma. Ask whether she is happy with her son’s career and Bhagyashree says, “Yes and no. Yes, because this is something he wanted to do. No, because considering there’s so much of strife, not everyone is able to handle the pressure.”
Asked to elaborate on the kind of pressure she is referring to, the 50-year-old says, “It requires a lot of internal strength to handle the pressure every Friday, or even the wait between two films, choosing the right people around you, the ones you work with… So many times, you are committed to a film where halfway through it, you realise that maybe you are not happy with the people you are with, and then you can’t leave. There’s the sense of commitment that you have to complete it.”
Bhagyashree, who shot to fame with her very first film, Maine Pyar Kiya (1989), goes on to clarify that she is not dissing a career in cinema altogether, but is only worried as a parent.
She tells us, “As a mother, you feel that your child will have to go through so much. Of course, this line gives you a lot of fame, adulation, love, and affection. But personally, I think it takes a a lot from you. You have to be strong to stay upright and the person you are. It’s easy to get carried away with adulation or get into depression if things don’t work out.”
