My goals are different from my parents’: Kaveri

- Rishabh Suri ■ rishabh.suri@htlive.com

All of just 15, Kaveri Kapur has her eyes set on making it big in the world of music. Daughter of singer- actor Suchitra Krishnamoorthy and filmmaker Shekhar Kapur, she’s been training under music maestro AR Rahman, and her next single, Smell of the Rain, is set to release next month.

“I wrote it, and at the surface, it’s about toxic relationships, and talks about how dysfunctional we are as human beings. It’s about our acceptance of our dark side. I first recorded it two years ago, and re-recorded it thrice. It’s my baby, and I’m passionate about it,” says Kaveri.

And, what sparked her interest in music? She reveals, “My mum took me to a studio to record my originals when I was 12. Ever since then, I’m working on it. The journey has been good. I was so young, I suddenly feel it’s getting real. For the first few years, I was just playing around which you are supposed to do at the age of 13-14!”

Kaveri has learnt a lot from her teacher, Rahman. “It was enriching and humbling. The stuff that I’ve learnt from him, I’ll carry it throughout my career. I’m a better artist now because I’ve worked with him. He gave me technical advice, and talked about importance of individuality in art. I look up to him as my mentor.”

Being the daughter of two renowned personalities, does she feel the pressure of expectations? Kaveri says, “Not really. I feel my goals are different from theirs. I’ve never felt the pressure, they have never put any pressure on me. I discuss my music with my dad. Both of us are similar people, creatively. We have same interests. He’s like an older version of me.”

Shekhar has been vocal about Kaveri’s talent. He had once tweeted: “I asked Kaveri if she would act in my film. ‘Only if I can compose the music,’ she replied firmly. Now that’s confidence.” When we mention this tweet, asking if she would face the camera, some day, she says, “Maybe, maybe not. Music is at the forefront now. If a chance comes, and I’m passionate about it, I’ll do it. I’m not saying no.”

I’ve never felt the pressure, they have never put any pressure on me. I discuss my music with my dad. Both of us are similar people, creatively. We have same interests. He’s like an older version of me.
